|Biographical information||Son of Jean-Jacques, Lord of Bottens, and Salomé Jeanne Elisabeth Quisard. In 1744 he married Elisabeth-Antoinette-Suzanne Lagier de Pluviannes. They had 4 children: Jeanne Isabelle Pauline (1751); Godefroy Charles Etienne (1753); Henri Etienne Georges (1754) and Jean François (1759). In 1779, after the death of his first wife, he married Angélique de la Fléchère. He studied theology at the academy of Lausanne and Leyde. In 1743, he was elected pastor at Lausanne. He became president of the French Seminar in 1759 and dean of the class in 1766. He helped Voltaire to write some articles for the Diderot's Encyclopedia and wrote himself some articles ("Liturgy", "Magician", "Magic", "Manes" et "Messie"). These articles were not signed. Between 1764 and 1766, he published a vast compilation of religious works written by his uncle titled La Sainte Écriture de l'Ancien Testament.|

|Content||The diarist writes to his children; especially his sons. He talks about his birth and upbringing. He also speaks about a serious illness he endured for more than two years when he was young and how much he suffered during that time. He writes about his studies to become a pastor and the years he spent at Stettlen. Finally, he recounts "some small adventures": incredible adventures with women; a ball missed because of imprisonment; and a sled race. The diary ends with this last event.|
